CHAPTER 16
Septemberâs cooling breezes carrying the scent of pine, whispered of autumnâs radiance, cascading down from higher elevations. Liz relished the changing seasons and with King at her side, she stood on her back porch to breathe in the crisp, mountain air and listen to the music of rustling leaves. This time of year, they had a different soundâcrisp and clattering, before dancing down to carpet the forest floor in gold.
Releasing King into the fenced area of the yard, Liz stared into the woods beyond. She had a lot on her mind.
Stevie, her bookish lawyer son, had just about taken leave of his senses with his new girlfriend, Tiffany. The two had become well acquainted during Stevieâs visit with his father in Daytona Beach. He had since returned to his job in the Washington, D.C. area, but was flying back and forth to Florida to visit Tiffany. Liz recalled a recent phone conversation.
âWeâre talking about marriage,â Stevie told his mother.
âThatâs awfully quick. Youâve only known each other a couple of months.
The words slipped out. âIs she, um, pregnant?â
âOh no, Mom,â the young man said emphatically. âWeâve never, and Tiffany has never, well you know. Sheâs a born-again Christian and sheâs saving herself for her husband. In fact, Iâm born-again now too. Tiffany helped me to understand what that means.â
âWhat does it mean?â Liz asked.
Stevie took a deep breath. âIâm new to this, but Iâll do my best to answer. All my life I wondered why Jesus had to die on the cross. It seemed to have no purpose, as if a bunch of angry people got together and crucified this messenger of peace and love. I now know that Jesus was, and is, more than a messenger of peace and love. He is God incarnate and he died for our sinsâmy sins.â
âAre you such a sinner and am I?â the mother questioned. âI always thought I was a good person who would go to heaven, if there is a heaven, that is.â
Stevie struggled to put his faith into words. âUm, Tiffany told me that salvation isnât about being good because weâre all sinners. She said that to be saved and go to heaven, we need to accept Jesus as our personal Savior.â
Liz did not want to diminish her sonâs enthusiasm, so before they said goodbye, she told him she would give it some thought.
Now, as she watched the trees wave in the wind, Stevieâs words repeated in her mind. He seemed to echo what Carlos had said about asking God to forgive his sins.
Could they be talking about the same thing?
The ringing of Lizâs phone left that question open-ended.
She answered quickly. âHi Carlos.â
âHello Liz,â he replied, downcast.
During a video chat, his tone and expression conveyed discouragement. His builder friend had decided not to purchase the family home.
âHe said there have been cost overruns on other projects and there isnât there isnât enough capital to go around.â
âOh well, câest la vieâ (Such is life) he said, as he tried to find something positive.
